WEST LAFAYETTE – No. 1 Purdue survived Oakland on Friday, getting 20 points, nine assists and seven rebounds from Braden Smith and putting six scorers in double figures on the way to an 87-77 win at Mackey Arena.
The Boilermakers improved to 2-0 despite trailing by as many as six in the first half against their foes from the Horizon League.
Here's what stood out from the less-than-impressive victory.
Rebounding woes
Purdue is simply not a very good rebounding team without Trey Kaufman-Renn in the lineup. At least, it doesn't look like it right now. After getting out-rebounded on the offensive end 20-12 in the opener against Evansville, the Boilermakers were outdone on the boards overall 27-17 in the first half against the Golden Grizzlies. Almost every time a shot went up in the first
