Police say a one-year-old girl who died after she was struck by a freight train on the New South Wales north-western slopes, had been playing with other children at the time.
Emergency services were called to Baranbah Street in Baan Baa, near Narrabri, at about 7:50pm on Friday after receiving reports a child had been hit by a freight train.
The one-year-old girl was treated by paramedics for serious injuries before being taken to Narrabri Hospital where she later died.
Oxley Police District Superintendent David Cooper said investigations were continuing into the circumstances of the incident, describing it as "an absolute tragedy".
"We can establish at this stage is that the child was with a number of other children, but those circumstances are still under investigation," he said.
