MEMPHIS, Tenn.— An inmate booked in the Shelby County jail has died, marking the third inmate death in just over a week, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) confirms.
SCSO confirmed Friday that Christopher Steele, 41, died about 10 a.m. at Regional One Hospital, where he had been receiving medical treatment Nov. 1.
His death is under investigation, as is routine with all in-custody deaths.
In the past nine days, two other Shelby Co. jail inmates have died.
Antonio First, 40, was found unresponsive in his cell Nov. 1. The Tennessee bureau of Investigation said that no foul play is suspected.
On Oct. 30, Dalton Goddard, an inmate at the jail, was found unresponsive in his cell at around 11:30 a.m., and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
