Paperwhites are quick-blooming bulbs that take just four to six weeks to flower. If planted in time, they will create a beautiful, showy display just in time for Christmas.
The trick is to force bulbs indoors—a growing method that encourages bulbs to flower outside of their natural season. You can force bulbs in soil or in pebbles following the instructions below. Whichever method you choose, begin by selecting paperwhite bulbs that are firm and heavy, free of mold, mildew, or spots. The papery outer skin should be intact.
The exact time from bulb to bloom varies based on your home’s environment—bulbs generally bloom faster in warmer homes and slower in cooler ones. To hedge your bets, start bulbs every week between November 13 and 27.
