Austin residents loudly reject 20% property tax increase in 'taxpayer revolt'

DALLAS — The city of Austin asked its own residents to pay significantly more in property taxes.

And the residents answered loud and clear at the ballot box, defeating Proposition Q by a nearly two-to-one margin, 64% - 36%.

Matt Mackowiak is co-chair of “ Save Austin Now ,” which opposed Prop Q and worked to defeat it.

He calls the result a “taxpayer revolt.”

“Taxpayers in this city cannot afford to live here as it is. And we sure as hell can’t deal with a 20% property tax increase forever, which is what they were proposing. Totally tone deaf. Totally ridiculous. The broadest coalition in the history of the city came together and fought this,” Mackowiak told us on Inside Texas Politics .

Prop Q would have raised the property tax for the average Austin homeowner by around $300.
