Greater Sudbury Police officers are urging residents and businesses to be vigilant as reports of counterfeit Canadian currency have surfaced in the region.

In a release, police said the fake money is showing up $50 and $100 bills in particular.

Police advise that people should go to www.bankofcanada.ca/banknotes/counterfeit-prevention to learn how to protect themselves from accepting Canadian currency.

The Bank of Canada says you if you suspect that you’re being offered a counterfeit note, assess the situation to ensure that you are not at risk. Then, do the following:

– Politely refuse the note and explain that you suspect that it may be counterfeit.

– Ask for another note (and check it too).

– Advise the person to check the note with the local police.

– Inform your local police
