RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina health officials said Saturday they have paused plans to distribute full food assistance benefits after the U.S. Supreme Court granted the Trump administration's appeal to temporarily halt payments.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services was preparing to issue the remaining November benefits over the weekend after distributing partial payments Friday morning. The Supreme Court's late Friday decision halted those plans.
"This is about a basic necessity – food – being caught in the middle of political chaos," Gov. Josh Stein said in a statement. "The hard-working people and families who rely on SNAP benefits deserve certainty, not confusion about whether they'll be able to put meals on the table this weekend and the rest of the month."
