A 5-month-old baby tragically died at a Newark YMCA on Friday.

Staff found the infant unresponsive around 8 a.m. and immediately called first responders. They attempted to resuscitate the baby before EMTs arrived around 8:15 a.m., but the infant could not be saved.

“The entire YMCA of Newark and Vicinity community is devastated by this. The loss of a child is heartbreaking, and we are keeping this infant, as well as the family in our prayers,” Michael Bright, President/CEO of YMCA of Newark said in a statement.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said they’re awaiting the medical examiner’s report at this time. The circumstances of the death remain under investigation.
