Over 1,000 flights have been canceled across the United States on the second day the Federal Aviation Administration limited flight capacity at 40 major airports during the government shutdown.
As of 2:32 p.m. on Nov. 8, FlightAware data showed 1,012 cancellations for flights "within, into, or out of the United States today."
For context, some winter storms can result in thousands of cancellations.
While not all of the delayed and canceled flights were caused by the FAA-mandated cuts, airlines have reported cutting hundreds of flights due to the order.
In emailed responses to USA TODAY, major airlines confirmed the effects the FAA cuts are having. The cuts were linked to:
- United Airlines canceling at least 168 flights on Nov. 8
- Southwest canceling just under 100 flights on Nov. 8
- American Airlines confirmed flight cancellations for Nov. 8, and referred to a prior Nov. 6 statement saying the company reduced capacity by about 4% at the major affected airports, amounting to around 220 flights canceled per day.
- Delta Air Lines said all canceled flights through Nov. 10 have been completed, but did not specify a total amount.
The first round of 4% cuts at 40 airports across the United States started Nov. 7, and is set to increase to 6% by Nov. 11, 8% by Nov. 13 and 10% by Nov. 14, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy originally announced.
But Duffy said on Nov. 7 that number could rise to 15% or even 20% of all scheduled flights as the record-breaking government shutdown stretches on and air traffic controllers work without pay, adding "strain" to the system.
Separate from the cancellations, absences of air traffic controllers on Friday forced the FAA to delay hundreds of flights at 10 airports including Atlanta, San Francisco, Houston, Phoenix, Washington, D.C., and Newark. More than 5,600 flights were delayed Friday.
Earlier this week, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said 20% to 40% of controllers were not showing up for work on any given day.
