(NewsNation) — The death penalty in the United States remains a critical topic, and it's now become apparent states across the country are enacting different policies for what they see fit.
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, lawmakers in over half of the states have introduced over 100 bills in 2025 to either expand or limit capital punishment, to alter execution protocols, and to change how death sentences are imposed. These legislations come on the back of states having carried out 41 executions this year, the largest amount in the country since 2012.
“Executions mark a particular moment in time," said University of Richmond law professor Corinna Latin. "They mark the punitiveness of the moment. It’s no surprise to me to see execution spiking."
