GRAY, Maine — The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is crediting the quick response by a couple hit by an apparent scam and by bank officials for the recovery of nearly $20,000.
The sheriff's office responded Friday to an Androscoggin Savings Bank branch in Gray for a report about possible fraud.
According to a news release from the sheriff's office, an older couple was apparently targeted in a computer scam.
Investigators said the scam involves a virus software rebate claim, in which scammers attempt to convince targets that they are owed a rebate.
"During this scam, the victims allow the scammers to have access to their computer or cellphone. The scammers then create a fake bank account portal that looks legitimate," the sheriff's office said. "The alleged rebate is said to be a sma
