ST. PAUL — Audrina Liebenow hammered a kill, turned around smiling and was wrestled to the floor by her Hawley teammates with more en route.
The kill sealed the top-seeded Nuggets’ second consecutive Minnesota Class 2A girls volleyball championship.
Hawley rallied back from a two-set deficit to edge No. 3 Chatfield 3-2 (20-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-16, 15-8) on Saturday at Grand Casino Arena. That was the Nuggets’ first five-set match this season.
Hawley (32-2) jumped to a 7-1 lead in the fifth set with a pair of kills from Katie Vetter and Annaka Johnson. Vetter tallied a service ace and two kills, and a kill from Liebenow made it 14-5.
Chatfield charged back to make it with a three-point surge to trim the lead to six points, but Hawley was determined to win another title.
