More than 60 pupils were caught smuggling weapons in just three months amid claims violence in schools has escalated into a “full-blown crisis”. ‌

The police said there were a record 63 weapons offences involving schools between April and June – the highest since changes to offensive weapon recording were introduced in 2021-22. ‌

There were 34 incidents of possession and 29 involving the “use” of weapons during other crimes being committed. ‌

According to a force report, 11 of them took place in primary schools.

The rise in weapon- carrying culture has seen pupils across the country taking knives, nitrous oxide canisters, razor blades, bottle openers, scissors and corkscrews onto school premises. ‌
