Political leaders and celebrities have led tributes to talkback radio veteran John Laws who has died.

The 90-year-old’s family announced his death in a statement on Sunday night, saying the former broadcaster had remained in “good health and even better spirits right up until the last few weeks”.

Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe described Laws as “a wise mentor, mischievous mate and a very good friend”.

“He worked hard, played harder and loved completely. A legend, in the very best, most Australian, sense of the word,” Crowe wrote on X.

Others who paid tribute to the man known as ‘Golden Tonsils’ included politicians including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who said Laws had been “an iconic voice and so much more”.
