MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — For many veterans, the toughest battles come after returning home, and one local service dog program at West Virginia University is helping them face those challenges.
The Hearts of Gold service dog training program at West Virginia University's Davis College of Agriculture and Natural Resources welcomed members of the Order of the Eastern Star organization for a special event celebrating their sponsorship of a new cohort of puppies to be trained as service dogs for veterans.
The Hearts of Gold program started in 2007, placing service dogs with veterans who have mobility and/or psychiatric disabilities.
Hearts of Gold matches dogs with clients based on the dog's ability to meet the client's needs and suit their lifestyle.
