Two people were rescued from a burning commercial structure on Charleston's West Side early Monday morning.
The man and woman were "hanging from the third-floor windows" when firefighters arrived, according to Capt. David Hodges of the Charleston Fire Department.
They were transported to a local hospital in serious condition, said Hodges.
Crews arrived around 3:45 a.m. to find fire showing in the building and "quickly made rescues" of the two people, said Hodges.
Virginia Street West in the area of the fire will be closed most of the day so the three-store building can be torn down because of "instability of the structure" following the fire, Hodges said.
