MCFARLAND, Wis. (WKOW) -- As Veterans Day nears, veterans were honored at American Legion Post 534 Sunday in McFarland.

The day kicked off with a free breakfast. Then, 37 veterans received handmade quilts from Quilts of Valor, a program looking to honor service members and veterans with healing and comforting quilts as a symbol of gratitude.

"Normally, it's always been military-military, but this is civilian, it's a very appreciated thanks since it's from civilians," said Dale Sankey, chaplain at American Legion Post 534.

The Quilts of Valor Program has donated more than 400,000 quilts to service members worldwide.
