This is an opinion column.

It was something. At least. Food banks across the state need every dollar. The stores from which they purchase food need every dollar.

And Alabamians need food. They needed it before becoming fodder in the federal government’s tug-of-war shutdown. And they’ll need it well after the stalemate is resolved.

They need it, whether they’re among the 752,000 Alabamians who receive help to help pay for food through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or if they’re federal employees who’ve not received a paycheck during the longest federal shutdown in U.S. history.

Good for Gov. Kay Ivey. She did something.

Maybe she acted because she was prodded by Black lawmakers, who called on her to convene a special session to tap state funds to support SNAP recipient
