TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (WILX) - Monday marks the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The ship, on its way from Superior, Wisconsin to Detroit, sunk in the midst of a winter storm on Lake Superior. All 29 crew members died in the wreck.

The 50th annual Mariners Memorial Service will take place Monday at noon at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy at Northwestern Michigan College’s Great Lakes Campus in Traverse City.

It’s held every year to remember and honor mariners who have perished on the Great Lakes and oceans.

A bell will be rung in honor of those who died.
