Students at Roosevelt Elementary in the Port Huron Area School District turned pocket change into patriotism this Veterans Day, raising $655 for the Disabled American Veterans’ Field of Flags program.
The school’s Student Council led a “Change for Change” drive, collecting spare coins and dollars from every grade. Their efforts earned 48 American flags now displayed in front of the Port Huron school to honor veterans in the community.
Second grade teacher Barbara Lapp said she first learned about the fundraiser when she received a DAV flyer in the mail.
Lapp shared the idea with Hillary Laski, a fifth grade teacher and Student Council leader, who organized the schoolwide competition. Each grade had its own jar in the front lobby, where students contributed loose change for two weeks.
