NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- A Code Blue has been declared in Newark, as freezing temperatures are expected to hit the tri-state area.

The Code Blue will be in effect from 8 p.m. on Monday until 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Overnight temperatures are expected to drop below 32 degrees. Shelters will be open during extended hours and increase bed capacity.

Street outreach workers will be reaching out to homeless residents and encouraging them to visit an emergency shelter or a drop-in warming center.

If you observe someone in need of shelter or non-emergency services, you can text "Path Home" to 855-11. The message will be delivered to street outreach teams, who will locate the individual and offer assistance.
