AUSTIN, Texas — Travis County prosecutors are dropping murder and deadly conduct charges against an Austin police officer in the fatal shooting of a man suffering a mental health episode in 2019 .
The KVUE Defenders have confirmed that Travis County District Attorney José Garza is entering a unique agreement with Officer Karl Krycia that will require him to teach about his experience at the police training academy in exchange for the charges being dismissed.
Attorneys representing the family of Mauris DeSilva were informed of the effort by Garza.
The move toward dismissing the case stands in sharp contrast to how Garza’s office handled the case against a second officer who opened fire that day. Officer Christopher Taylor was tried and convicted and sentenced to prison.
