PITTSBURGH (WKBN) - NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo are reporting that the Pittsburgh Steelers have released veteran safety Juan Thornhill.

He now heads to waivers and will become a free agent if he clears.

The Steelers also claimed safety Sebastian Castro off waivers from Tampa Bay. He previously signed with Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa last summer.

Thornhill signed with the Steelers back in March and appeared in nine games for Pittsburgh.

He finishes his brief stint with the Steelers with 38 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Prior to this time in Pittsburgh, Thornhill battled injuries and appeared in 22 games with the Browns. During his time with Cleveland, he piled up 103 tackles and one tackle for loss.

He was released by the Browns in February.
