The slumping Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to pull the plug on the Juan Thornhill experiment.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the Steelers have released Juan Thornhill after nine games. The veteran safety will now head to waivers, but will become a free agent if he’s unclaimed.

In another move, the Steelers claimed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Sebastian Castro off of waivers. He signed with Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent in April, later moved to their practice squad, and then was picked up by Tampa Bay in September before returning to Pittsburgh.

A two-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, Juan Thornhill appeared in nine games with the Steelers. He tallied one pass breakup and 38 combined tackles, per Pro Football Reference.
