President Donald Trump says he wants to give at least $2,000 rebate checks to most Americans as a result of money made from tariffs. High income earners would not get a check but it’s unknown who would fall in that category.

Creighton University Economics Professor Ernie Goss told Missourinet now is not the time to be “giving away money.”

“I think what we’re seeing from the President indicates his concern about the overall economy, which is slowing down, according to our two surveys that we conduct here at Creighton University. Things are slowing down. The manufacturing sector is losing jobs,” said Goss.

Goss said there are better ways to stimulate the economy in Missouri and the U.S.

“We cannot afford this,” he said. “This is no time for the federal government to be giving out money,
