AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The families of five campers and the two counselors who died at Camp Mystic in the July 4 floods filed a lawsuit Monday alleging “gross negligence and reckless regard” for camp safety, calling the camp's response to the deadly floods an "entirely preventable tragedy."
The petition seeks accountability for the 27 deaths, according to a press release.
“These young girls died because a for-profit camp put profit over safety,” the petition alleged. “The Camp chose to house young girls in cabins sitting in flood-prone areas, despite the risk, to avoid the cost of relocating the cabins.”
Camp Mystic is located along a high-risk flood zone area along the Guadalupe River, also known as “Flash Flood Alley.”
