QUINCY (WGEM) - A free cholesterol screening is being offered on Nov. 20 at Blessing Resource Center in Quincy.
The World Heart Federation reports high cholesterol causes 3.6 million deaths every year.
Laura Wietholder, Blessing Health System registered nurse and community outreach coordinator, said high cholesterol is dangerous if left untreated and can cause artery diseases, heart attacks and strokes.
“And unfortunately it’s not necessarily something that you might suspect that you have,” Wietholder said. “It doesn’t really have symptoms, so you could have an elevated cholesterol level and feel perfectly healthy.”
If diagnosed with high cholesterol, Wietholder said medication is an option, but typically the first step is to focus on diet and exercise.
