The city is permanently unplugging its automated speed enforcement cameras effective midnight on Friday to meet a November 14 deadline imposed by the Ontario government for their removal.

The city had little choice but to comply with new Queen’s Park legislation that put an end to the speed camera program after Premier Doug Ford called the devices nothing but a cash grab by 37 cities across the province.

Ford remained determined to shut the cameras down after city mayors wrote a collective letter asking him to keep the cameras up and running to keep community safety zones and school zones safe from speeding motorists.
