BEND, Ore. — A Deschutes County judge sentenced a Portland man on Monday to 30 years in prison in connection with a planned mass shooting at Smith Rock State Park in 2023 .

The sentencing came down after a jury recently found Samson Garner, now 41, guilty on 26 felony charges including attempted murder. The jury heard testimony from dozens of witnesses and reviewed over 100 trial exhibits.

Garner shared plans to shoot participants and spectators at a climbing event at Smith Rock State Park in October 2023, according to a joint news release from the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office. Garner was aware that a few hundred people would be attending the event and had discussed violent thoughts towards people, authorities said.
