DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) - After voters rejected a $70 million bond issue last week, the Dubuque School Board met Monday night to address the district’s future.
The failed bond would have reduced the district’s middle schools from three to two by closing Jefferson Middle School and demolishing Washington Middle School to build a new facility. Board members said the consolidation would have saved approximately $2 million annually in operational costs.
“We had chosen the path of efficiencies through facilities, through buildings, and when that did not succeed sufficiently to a 60 percent level, we’re now left with some incredibly undesirable choices to be made in the other categories,” said board member Nancy Bradley.
