The first major blast of winter weather this season was bringing snow and freezing temperatures across the Midwest on Monday.

Snow began Sunday evening and continued into Monday in the Midwest, with the heaviest totals falling south and west of Chicago in the morning. The temperatures in Chicago, Minneapolis and Milwaukee were around 25 degrees early Monday morning.

That cold air was headed toward the East Coast, where temperatures in the 30s and 40s were expected today.

Some areas near Lake Michigan had reports of about a foot of snow, according to the National Weather Service. There were about 3 1/2 inches of snow in Chicago by 9 a.m. Central time, and the snow was continuing to fall.

The storm could bring 1 to 3 more inches of snow to other parts of the Midwest on Monday. Northweste
