Today, Tuesday, November 11th, the nation observes Veterans Day, a federal holiday dedicated to honoring all American military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, in both wartime and peacetime.
Across the country, communities are holding parades, ceremonies, and tributes to express gratitude for the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the millions of men and women who have worn the uniform. The official national ceremony, which typically includes a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery.
Originally established as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor veterans of all American wars.
