BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - The longest government shutdown in U.S. history is nearing an end after a group of Senate Democrats joined Republicans to advance a funding bill in a 60-40 vote Monday night. The House, which has been in recess since mid-September, is expected to vote on the measure in the coming days.
The deal includes backpay and protections for federal workers but omits a resolution on expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits, which Democrats had pushed to extend. That issue will be revisited next month.
The shutdown, which lasted more than six weeks, disrupted federal services nationwide, including thousands of flight cancellations due to air traffic controller shortages. President Donald Trump signaled support for the agreement, saying the country would reopen “very quickly.”
