The FBI is investigating the death of an 18-year-old who died aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship during a trip from Miami to the Caribbean, according to multiple reports.
The ship returned to Miami on Saturday, Nov. 8, where authorities began their investigation, ABC News reports.
Few details have been released about the circumstances surrounding the death of Florida resident Anna Kepner, a high school senior.
It is unclear whether foul play is suspected. The FBI’s involvement stems from the special maritime laws that apply to incidents on cruise ships in international waters.
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the death in a statement, saying it is cooperating with the FBI, and supporting the Kepner family.
Anna's family described her as a "happy, bubbly" young woman with a bright future, according to the ABC report which noted she was a straight-A student with plans to graduate high school.
