MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa —

A popular soup kitchen in Marshalltown is transforming into a Mexican restaurant for one day, thanks to the generosity of Alfonso Medina, owner of La Carreta Mexican Grill, who aims to provide free meals to those in need during tough economic times.

Medina said, "Business has been booming. Business has been great."

He feels fortunate to have a successful restaurant and wants to give back to the community. Medina proposed the idea of transforming the soup kitchen into a Mexican restaurant for a day, offering to bring his staff and food at no charge.

"Hey, can I turn the House of Compassion into a restaurant for a Mexican eatery? ... Your staff doesn't have to worry about nothing. I'll bring my staff. We'll bring our food and we'll run the show," Medina said.
