A grieving father whose son was found unresponsive in a northern Victorian display home pool says he wants pools to be covered when homes are vacant.

Emergency services were called to a GJ Gardiner Homes display home in Kialla, near Shepparton, on Sunday evening after 8-year-old Gurshabad Singh was located just before 7:00pm.

His father, Talwinder Singh, remembered him as a "charming" and kind boy who excelled at his special school bringing home multiple appreciation awards.

He was set to celebrate his ninth birthday in two weeks.

Friends and relatives filled the family home at the Sevens Creek estate in Kialla on Tuesday offering their support to Mr Singh and his family.
