GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man exchanged gunfire with Grand Rapids Police officers on Tuesday afternoon. After a brief search, he was arrested, officials say.
The situation began around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. It happened in the area of Adams Street SE and Blaine Avenue SE, near Kalamazoo Avenue.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said an officer in training and his field trainer were on patrol when they noticed a person of interest in the theft of a firearm.
Officers say they called out to him, and the suspect fired four rounds at officers, hitting their patrol car.
The officers returned fire, Winstorm says. No one was hit, and the man ran off.
More Grand Rapids officers, East Grand Rapids Police, the Kent County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police all responded to the scene.
