Guillermo del Toro’s rendition of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is now available on Netflix, taking its rightful place among other progressive features that the streaming platform hosts.

Del Toro’s reimagining makes critical plot changes in order to transform Victor Frankenstein into a deliberately cruel creator, rather than a brilliant scientist obsessed with conquering death for sentimental reasons.

His revisions cram modern identity issues into the gothic story, so that the monster can pressure Victor into apologizing for his creation, in a moment of tearful self-awareness before he dies.

Shelley’s 1818 novel tells the story of young Victor Frankenstein who loses his mother to scarlet fever, igniting his scientific quest to conquer death by reanimating the dead.
