WATERBURY, Conn. (WFSB) - The end of the government shutdown is said to be in sight, but people are still feeling the impacts.
Families across Connecticut did not receive their SNAP benefits on time.
As a result, Waterbury Public Schools opened a food bank to help students and families who were struggling.
They had rooms full of food that were ready to be given out at all Waterbury schools.
“Last weekend, we had families that without this help did not have enough food to feed their children for the weekend,” said Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski.
The food was donated by teachers, staff, and community members.
It was divided and bagged to be handed out to students on Fridays.
Last Friday, they gave out 600 bags. This week, 900 families signed up to receive food.
