BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - An assistant fire chief in Bangor is praising the quick thinking of a garbage truck driver whose load caught on fire Wednesday morning.

Bangor Fire says the driver noticed smoke from the back of his truck while doing his route on Kenduskeag Avenue.

The driver was able to pull into the parking lot of an unused building where the trash was dumped.

As a result, the truck didn’t burn up, and the fire was extinguished in a safe location.

Bangor Fire notes having a safe place to work was crucial as they never know what people throw out.
