BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A portion of Highway 280 will be closed this weekend as crews prepare for a new bridge at Pumphouse Road, part of an ongoing widening project on the busy highway .

Starting Friday night, Nov. 14, at 11 p.m., all lanes east and westbound at Pumphouse Road will be closed. Westbound lanes will reopen each morning at 5 a.m., but eastbound lanes will remain closed through Monday morning at 6 a.m.

About 100,000 drivers use Highway 280 almost every day, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.

“Traffic is already crazy out here. Every day you never know what’s going to happen. If someone gets into an accident, traffic could be backed up for miles,” said Eli Brown, who works at Condado in the Cahaba Village Shopping Center.
