Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has continued to push for Australia to host the COP31 climate summit , despite a potentially $2 billion price tag.

Australia has been locked in competition with Turkey over efforts to host the UN climate conference.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Mr Albanese revealed that Turkish President Recep Erdogan has said that he would not back out from his bid to host.

“There has never been a Conference of the Parties held in the Pacific. Our neighbours as well as Australia think it is time that it was held in this region,” Mr Albanese said.

“President Erdogan has written to me in the last 24 hours. He is maintaining his position in response to Australia maintaining our position.
