ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WITN) - With the government shutdown still underway, many are worried about what their food benefits will look like this month, which is why the Food Bank of the Albemarle is holding a special food drive.

The Food Bank of Albemarle has tried to help fight food insecurity in 15 counties, and the first day of a three-day food drive showed increased efforts to meet growing demand.

Donations are welcome, as the food pantries the bank serves have seen a 35% to 50% increase in visits since the shutdown.

“That’s a pretty significant increase in just a short amount of time. We’re seeing more and more people come in who have been affected. It’s a chain effect and doesn’t affect people who’re just on SNAP, but affects the entire economy,” said Brian Gray, FBA director of com
