GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson announced he will retire in February 2026 after more than 20 years with the department. Thompson said he made the decision so he can spend more time with his family, including his young twins.

Thompson began his law enforcement career in 1988 with the Asheboro Police Department and joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2003. He worked in narcotics, resource management and patrol, later serving as Assistant Chief before being named chief in 2022.

During his tenure, Thompson led the department through several of its most difficult moments, including the deaths of Sgt. Dale Nix and Officer Michael Horan .
