MORTON ( 25News Now ) - If folks noticed fewer pennies being used lately, an expert from 210 Financial in Morton said that is not a coincidence.
On Wednesday, the penny will be no more. The U.S. Mint in Philadelphia struck its last circulating penny on Wednesday after President Trump canceled the 1-cent coin due to production costs exceeding its face value, costing 2.7 cents to make each penny.
Central Illinois businesses are already experiencing the impact. The Caseys’ in Morton and the Hobby Lobby in Pekin have posted signs on their doors noting a penny shortage.
