NEWPORT Ore. (KPTV) - Newport city officials and community members voiced strong opposition to potential federal plans to build a new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center on the city airport property during a town hall meeting Wednesday evening.

The meeting drew hundreds of attendees to the Newport City Council chamber, with many residents spilling into the hallways, gathering outside, and joining online to take part in the discussion.

Abril Aldama was one of those who spoke at the meeting, saying her father was detained by federal agents in September and taken to an ICE facility in Tacoma.

“He’s been there with me for everything,” Aldama said. “On behalf of everybody who is suffering and doesn’t wanna speak up. I’m asking you guys, please don’t do this.”
