Remembering the Armistice Day blizzard
It was a late fall day in the Upper Midwest including Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and parts of Illinois. Temperatures were in the 50-degree range early in the day with hunters out to “get the trophy ducks.”
However, never take Mother Nature for granted. A massive, unexpected snowstorm known historically as the Armistice Day Blizzard hit with a vengeance on this date in 1940 . Areas along the Mississippi River (like Lansing, and Dubuque) were hit especially hard. Snowfall reached 1 to 2 feet in places, with drifts over 10 feet. Temperatures dropped from about 50 in the morning to below zero that night.
