People who follow a vegan diet, which excludes all animal products, may have a hard time getting the vitamins and minerals they need. We asked Sherry Gray, RD , a registered dietitian and an extension educator at the University of Connecticut, if it's safe to go vegan without supplements.

Q: What vitamins and minerals are typically missing from a vegan diet? Would I have to take supplements if I decide to go vegan?
Gray: Vegan diets can increase the risk for a number of different deficiencies, like vitamin B12 , vitamin D , zinc, calcium, iron, iodine, and omega-3 fatty acids, especially if you don't choose the right plant sources or fortified foods.
