New Delhi, Nov 13: The Supreme Court on Thursday suggested a phased ban on high-end petrol and diesel vehicles to encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India.
A Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed that with larger and more advanced EVs now available, luxury Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars could be gradually phased out without affecting the common public.
Attorney General R Venkataramani informed the Court that the government supports the move, noting that 13 ministries are engaged in EV promotion efforts. The remarks came while hearing a petition filed by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation seeking effective implementation of EV policies. The matter will be heard again in four weeks.
