A man was struck by a tractor-trailer on Sunrise Highway in Wantagh early Thursday afternoon, Nov. 13, shutting down the eastbound lanes.

The collision happened just after 12:30 p.m. between Sunrise Highway and Morris Gate, Nassau County Police said. Officers arrived to find a male pedestrian who had been hit by a truck. He was conscious at the scene as first responders began treatment.

The eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway were closed between Oakland Avenue and Morris Gate while officers investigated the crash. Drivers were urged to expect delays in the area.

Fire scene photographer John Scalesi Jr. said on Facebook that the man had been involved in a separate crash on the westbound side before exiting his SUV and attempting to cross Sunrise Highway, where he was then struck by a tractor-trailer.

The man’s condition and extent of his injuries were not immediately clear.
